Both kernel/kernel-smp run on a smp system. I think kernel would just enable the first processor. I have never tried running kernel-smp on a 1p system.

I am running the smp version on a one CPU machine and am not having any problems.

Linux cornette-development 2.6.1-1.52smp #1 SMP Tue Jan 20 15:19:59 EST 2004 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

I downloaded the smp version by mistake, but it still works. Of course, all of the features won't be usable.
