Fred,
maybe it is because of prelink (or lack of it).. If your machine has been just installed , maybe prelink didnt run yet... It helps to improve startup times of apps by prelinking the necessary libs to the application... You can run the prelink cron job now to see if it helps improve performance.. It is under /etc/cron.daily/prelink . It will take some time to finish , as it tries to prelink a lot of applications...
