I think he meant he just wants a spindown on the HDD, not to sleep the whole 
computer.

hdparm is your friend in that case, there is a -S n switch which sets the 
\spindown timeout'.  man hdparm for more.

Word of warning, I set -S 0 on an old laptop drive, it subsequently spun down 
immediately after each IO action :-)  Not sure if that's par for the course 
or just a weird one but I now avoid -S 0.
