OS: Fedora Core 1 with kernel 2.6.1-rc3-X8664-1 Bios Revision: 1.01 (tried 2885101i, but it wouldnt boot) Bios Settings: Failsafe defaults, disabled onboard nic, disabled acpi CPU: 2 opteron 248 RAM: 8gb installed and recognized but not all used Additional Cards: 05:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8x] (rev a2) 01:03.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5701 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 15) (the onboard 5703 doesnt work w/ tg3 in 2.6.1-rc3-X8664) Problem 1: when using all 8gb of memory (kingston model KVR333X72RC25/1G) the machine fails memory tests. if the amount of memory linux sees is limited to 5gb at the command line with mem=5G the machine passes the same memory tests. if mem=6G is passed to the kernel at boot time the machine fails memory tests. Problem 2: the onboard BCM5703 doesn't seem to work with linux. i was told "The BIOS seems to be broken. It didn't assign an correct IO region for the Tigon3." here are some error messages when it tries to initialize the card: Dec 8 12:00:19 fc1 kernel: tg3.c:v2.2 (August 24, 2003) Dec 8 12:00:19 fc1 kernel: PCI: Unable to reserve mem region #1:ff000180fc700000@fffe8000000000 for device 02:09.0 Dec 8 12:00:19 fc1 kernel: PCI: Unable to reserve mem region #1:ff000180fc700000@fffe8000000000 for device 02:09.0 Dec 8 12:00:19 fc1 kernel: tg3: Cannot obtain PCI resources, aborting.
