I have Compaq Evo N800v

With acpi kernel module on (add acpi=on in grub.conf kernel line)
you can also use ACPI events for backlight (closing/opening the display)

/etc/acpi/lid:

event=button/lid.*
action=/usr/local/bin/radeontool light toggle

provided you have copied my modified radeontool (toggle option added) in
/usr/local/bin

See attached radeontool-1.2.tgz

Attachment: radeontool-1.2.tgz
Description: application/compressed-tar
