You mean "hdparm -i /dev/hdX" or "hdparm /dev/hdX" (where X is to be exchanged by the proper harddrive letter) does not work at all and just prints out an error? "smartctl -t long /dev/hdX" and see what it reports. If all fails kick the disk to the trash. I remember you also said that the disk made bad noises.
