How are you configuring your iptables firewall rules? Without more detail, this question closely resembles "How do I tune up my Ford?"

If you don't know your way around iptables too well, I suggest that a powerful and simple interface to setting up a firewall is Shorewall (www.shorewall.net). I'm using it on nearly 30 boxes right now, from desktops to servers to router/gateways. Easy to configure, and well-supported by its author.
