A 'mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom' hangs for a long time, then quits with an I/O error. The system has a KS57A motherboard and a Aopen CDRW4048. the /dev/cdrom entry is soft linked to /dev/scd0 as it should be. Here's the output I get: /dev/cdrom: Input/output error mount: block device /dev/cdrom is write-protected, mounting read-only /dev/cdrom: Input/output error mount: you must specify the filesystem type Here's the corresponding snippet from /var/log/messages: Sep 27 19:54:05 steverod kernel: scsi0: ERROR on channel 0, id 0, lun 0, CDB: Read (10) 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 02 00 Sep 27 19:54:05 steverod kernel: Info fld=0x0, Current sd0b:00: sense key Medium Error Sep 27 19:54:05 steverod kernel: Additional sense indicates Random positioning error Sep 27 19:54:05 steverod kernel: I/O error: dev 0b:00, sector 0 Sep 27 19:54:11 steverod kernel: scsi0: ERROR on channel 0, id 0, lun 0, CDB: Read (10) 00 00 00 00 01 00 00 01 00 Sep 27 19:54:11 steverod kernel: Info fld=0x1, Current sd0b:00: sense key Medium Error Sep 27 19:54:11 steverod kernel: Additional sense indicates Random positioning error Sep 27 19:54:11 steverod kernel: I/O error: dev 0b:00, sector 4 Sep 27 19:54:18 steverod kernel: scsi0: ERROR on channel 0, id 0, lun 0, CDB: Read (10) 00 00 00 00 10 00 00 04 00 Sep 27 19:54:18 steverod kernel: Info fld=0x10, Current sd0b:00: sense key Medium Error Sep 27 19:54:18 steverod kernel: Additional sense indicates Random positioning error Sep 27 19:54:18 steverod kernel: I/O error: dev 0b:00, sector 64 Sep 27 19:54:24 steverod kernel: scsi0: ERROR on channel 0, id 0, lun 0, CDB: Read (10) 00 00 00 00 11 00 00 03 00 Sep 27 19:54:40 steverod kernel: Info fld=0x11, Current sd0b:00: sense key Medium Error Sep 27 19:54:54 steverod kernel: Additional sense indicates Random positioning error Sep 27 19:55:01 steverod kernel: I/O error: dev 0b:00, sector 68 Sep 27 19:55:16 steverod kernel: scsi0: ERROR on channel 0, id 0, lun 0, CDB: Read (10) 00 00 00 00 12 00 00 02 00 Sep 27 19:55:16 steverod kernel: Info fld=0x12, Current sd0b:00: sense key Medium Error Sep 27 19:55:23 steverod kernel: Additional sense indicates Random positioning error Sep 27 19:55:24 steverod kernel: I/O error: dev 0b:00, sector 72 Sep 27 19:55:24 steverod kernel: scsi0: ERROR on channel 0, id 0, lun 0, CDB: Read (10) 00 00 00 00 13 00 00 01 00 Sep 27 19:55:30 steverod kernel: Info fld=0x13, Current sd0b:00: sense key Medium Error Sep 27 19:55:30 steverod kernel: Additional sense indicates Random positioning error Sep 27 19:55:30 steverod kernel: I/O error: dev 0b:00, sector 76 Sep 27 19:55:30 steverod kernel: scsi0: ERROR on channel 0, id 0, lun 0, CDB: Read (10) 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 02 00 Sep 27 19:55:31 steverod kernel: Info fld=0x0, Current sd0b:00: sense key Medium Error Sep 27 19:55:31 steverod kernel: Additional sense indicates Random positioning error Sep 27 19:55:31 steverod kernel: I/O error: dev 0b:00, sector 0 Sep 27 19:55:31 steverod kernel: scsi0: ERROR on channel 0, id 0, lun 0, CDB: Read (10) 00 00 00 00 01 00 00 01 00 Sep 27 19:55:31 steverod kernel: Info fld=0x1, Current sd0b:00: sense key Medium Error Sep 27 19:55:31 steverod kernel: Additional sense indicates Random positioning error Sep 27 19:55:31 steverod kernel: I/O error: dev 0b:00, sector 4 Sep 27 19:55:31 steverod kernel: scsi0: ERROR on channel 0, id 0, lun 0, CDB: Read (10) 00 00 00 00 10 00 00 04 00 Sep 27 19:55:31 steverod kernel: Info fld=0x10, Current sd0b:00: sense key Medium Error Sep 27 19:55:31 steverod kernel: Additional sense indicates Random positioning error Sep 27 19:55:31 steverod kernel: I/O error: dev 0b:00, sector 64 Sep 27 19:55:31 steverod kernel: scsi0: ERROR on channel 0, id 0, lun 0, CDB: Read (10) 00 00 00 00 11 00 00 03 00 Sep 27 19:55:31 steverod kernel: Info fld=0x11, Current sd0b:00: sense key Medium Error Sep 27 19:55:31 steverod kernel: Additional sense indicates Random positioning error Sep 27 19:55:31 steverod kernel: I/O error: dev 0b:00, sector 68 Sep 27 19:55:31 steverod kernel: scsi0: ERROR on channel 0, id 0, lun 0, CDB: Read (10) 00 00 00 00 12 00 00 02 00 Sep 27 19:55:31 steverod kernel: Info fld=0x12, Current sd0b:00: sense key Medium Error Sep 27 19:55:31 steverod kernel: Additional sense indicates Random positioning error Sep 27 19:55:31 steverod kernel: I/O error: dev 0b:00, sector 72 Sep 27 19:55:31 steverod kernel: scsi0: ERROR on channel 0, id 0, lun 0, CDB: Read (10) 00 00 00 00 13 00 00 01 00 Any suggestions on how to resolve the issue?
