In any average message board you should find a few users who complain about a "sluggish" Red Hat Linux 9 or who claim that compiling an own kernel.org would result in a significant speedup. The usual pointers on disabling unused services, graphical effects, UTF-8 locale, and enabling U-DMA are fruitless. Especially when the user with the problem doesn't cooperate. The average newbie either refuses to do a few tests or simply installs a different distribution which offers a faster "feeling". Well, you also wrote that you're going to replace the machines' hardware soon. But at least you know how to analyze the problem with tests and test kernels together with a developer from Red Hat. That's more promising. - -- -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE/V3gV0iMVcrivHFQRAkAgAJ4hlP0hhPrZHGmsF/5GRq6eSM1Y8wCeP9Xu zLxGVVwymciUuRO7pcxPry4= =OUu3 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
