Have you tried latest Gnumeric and Abiword?
I abandoned OO for spreadsheets and Abiword is useable, only time I see
Abi crash is when saving docs to a samba box.

But latest OO seems to be usable for me for spreadsheets but Gnumeric is
much faster and haven't crashed on anything. It also
has better import handling of xls which I get stuck dealing with.
