Had the same experience. Turns out it just had a lot to do - the 97 updates include some really large packages and it is just taking its time to perform a big nasty RPM transaction. My 2.53GHz P4 took almost 5 minutes to start actually installing packages after the download was complete. Just be patient and it will all work.
