ACPI, APM and power failures

Hi

I've just installed Fedora Core 1 test 3.

The biggest problem I have with it is that my Fujitsu/Siemens Amilo D
laptop tends to shutdown on its own from time to time (2/3 times a day)
while I'm actively using it (typing texts, playing videos) or when it is
not used (screensaver on).

At first, I thought it was hardware-related. But, having Windows XP on
another partition, I could see that the problem didn't happen on Windows
XP. So the problem seems to come from Fedora.

Then, I tried to de-activate both acpid and apmd. And the problem seems
to have gone away and I'm happy :)

Now, my questions are:

 - Why are both acpid and apmd activated by default ? Aren't they
mutually exclusive ?

 - What could possibly be the cause of the problem ?

 - How could I help find the exact cause of the problem ?

Thanks for your help.
