The logfiles can be your friend when faced with a mystery (I did not see logs 
mentioned in your emails yet).  I have seen samba stuff in

/var/log/samba/*  and
/var/log/messages

What's the iptables situation on the linux guys?  Can they see stuff on TCP 
137:139?
