Setting resolution as a kernel parameter might help, look up the different
modes and choose one for your hardware I use 791 which is 1024x768x64k. So
as an example a line in my /etc/grub.conf looks like this: 

kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.22-1.2115.nptl ro root=LABEL=/ hdd=ide-scsi vga=791
