You should be able to configure it through the Text Mode Setup utility 
simply called "setup". Even from within a xterm if it's a driver issue. 
XF86config file in /etc/X11/.

I'm using Ximian desktop everywhere, so I can't remember the GNOME utility 
for this.  But there should also be a gui tool in both Gnome and KDE.
