I really suggest you check out vmware instead of dual booting, www.vmware.com 
have a free 30 day trial.  I don't know how it does with games, but for the 
couple of apps I can't make native yet it has been absolutely perfect running 
XP inside Linux.  This laptop last booted Oct 30th!  If you plan this method, 
get lots of RAM.

For the laptop, the Dell Inspiron 8000 and 5150 here have been good Linux 
converts, as has the IBM R31.  But I bet most laptops are well served by 
Fedora Core 1.
