At least for me (Radeon 9100) the binary drivers make FlightGear and some 
other 3D games playable - there's a difference of night and day in 
performance. Native XFree86 driver gives me like 2.5fps on FlightGear, 
with the binary driver it's > 25 (don't remember exactly). 

Really I hate to use any binary drivers but it's almost worth the pain 
here...

Um, no, you can update XFree86 with the drivers installed but some amount 
of additional twiddling is necessary if updating XFree86 or kernel.
