Try:

ll `echo $SGML_CATALOG_FILES`

If that fails, you should set it (in .bashrc or /etc/bashrc). Try
/etc/sgml/catalog, which is where it is on both RH 8.0 and Fedora
Core.

However, if you updated the relevant package, the catalog should be
correct. However, (curiouser and curiouser):

------------------------------
[root@issola root]# rpm -qf /etc/sgml/catalog
file /etc/sgml/catalog is not owned by any package
------------------------------

So here it is:

------------------------------
[root@issola root]# cat /etc/sgml/catalog
CATALOG "/etc/sgml/sgml-docbook-4.2-1.0-22.1.cat"
CATALOG "/etc/sgml/xml-docbook-4.2-1.0-22.1.cat"
CATALOG "/etc/sgml/sgml-docbook-3.1-1.0-22.1.cat"
CATALOG "/etc/sgml/sgml-docbook-4.0-1.0-22.1.cat"
CATALOG "/etc/sgml/sgml-docbook-3.0-1.0-22.1.cat"
CATALOG "/etc/sgml/sgml-docbook-4.1-1.0-22.1.cat"
CATALOG "/etc/sgml/xml-docbook-4.1.2-1.0-22.1.cat"
------------------------------

Maybe yours did not get updated?
