Ok, since no one else seems to have these issues, and since i installed
FC1 on an old laptop and seems to be working fine, and since a downgrade
on the "faulty" system to RH9 seems to work fine, i did the self-test on
all FC1 install CDs. Surprise: the 3rd CD had errors around 67%.
I wiped it's surface clean with a soft cloth, tested it again, and now
it passes the test.

Question: what's on the 3rd CD around 60...70% that, if corrupted,
makes "perl -pi -e 's/foo/bar/'" segfault?

I'll probably attempt another instalation but, if that one fails
again... <shudder>
