I just downloaded both apache 2.0.48 and PHP 4.3.4 and compiled both from source with no problems. Actually I enabled-ssl which I could never get to work on RH 9.

I don't quite know what the problem is, but I have built a php 4.3.4 RPM, if you are interested.
I based it on Red Hat's spec and built accordingly.
The src.rpm is located here:
