Something else is up if BT can take down your whole OS...

One thing it does use a lot of is unallocated RAM, it unfortunately opens the 
downloaded file such that accesses are cached, when its not a good idea.  The 
result is that as it scurries around the different pieces of the file putting 
it together, all your RAM gets used.  If you don't normally stress the 
machine much, perhaps this RAM exercising is causing the crashes and the 
problem lies with the RAM.
