Greetings. My sound in an on-board C-Media CM8738 chip. During the post install config, the system locks when I attempt to play the test sound. The only way to get past this is to power down the system and reboot. I then skip the sound config and I am able to log into gnome. I cannot, however, log into kde, which locks up upon peripheral initialization, which I strongly suspect is sound related. I searched Bugzilla, and I found bug 85757, filed for Red Hat 8, but it has no action other than the initial filing of the bug. I know of no workaround, and I'm wondering if I should try a different distro. This idea is particularly frustrating, because I decided to try Fedora after my frustration with Mandrake 9.2's inability to correct configure my sound card also, although the problem was one that didn't lock up my computer, so I doubt the two problems are related. Any help would be appreciated. The Fedora Project looks like an exciting piece of work and this seems like the only thing preventing me from enjoying it.
