IDE hot swap in Fedora

Two months ago, on another list, Alan Cox mentioned code being added to
2.4.23-pre for IDE hotswap. Perhaps that code is in the Fedora Core 1
kernel - there was a lot of changes in ide.c that resemble the recent
changes to 2.4.23-pre . But then, I am clueless about kernel code ...

If so, can anyone outline the steps required to hotswap an IDE drive?

The drives are in IDE removable trays and connected as hde and hdg on
a Maxtor/Promise ATA133 card with the PDC20269 chipset, if that matters.
They are in a test machine, backed up, and expendable.
