Difficult to comment on since you force-installed a package I'm not familiar with. Check XMMS preferences on what audio output driver you use. Depending on whether you run GNOME or KDE, this may be "eSounD" or "aRts" or even directly to kernel OSS driver. Maybe the problem is in that area. --
