Your laptop might be different, but my Dell laptop outputs to a
projector when I press Fn+F5 to cycle between the LCD and the VGA-out.
Also, have you made sure you're outputting 1024x768?  Most projectors
that I know of tend to have that as their sweet spot.

And, if the projector itself suggests 640x480, well then, set your
resolution to that.  There's got to be a reason it suggests that res,
n'est ce pas?
