NPTL, Exec-shield, laptop-mode, a bunch of fixes from 2.4.23pre,
a bunch of ACPI fixes, a few 'known good' drivers that broke in 
more recent kernels, various random fixes.

To answer your other question, a vanilla kernel should work, but
obviously, you won't get the above features.
