As you say yourself, most people are reading "Linux bad, Windows good" into the statement - and he should have known that. There's nothing wrong with pointing out that Linux has its shortcomings and that people should not expect too much. There's everything wrong with pointing them to a competing monopoly instead in the same sentence.
