Recent FC1 install, X suddenly stops working

/etc/X11/X86Config has not been modified since original install. This was a new install three days ago, updated via yum at that time to bring it current. I installed xine, mplayer, xmms-mp3, etc. from livna last night. Today, mozilla and gnome-terminal could not open windows. I tried to reboot, and I had to take rhgb off kernel line in grub to boot, and had to go to initlevel 3, as X kept failing. I have no error messages in /var/log/XFree86.0.log, and when I issue startx command, all looks fine until the message "waiting for X server to shut down" following the SESSION_MANAGER=local/.... message.
Any suggestions on how to get more information about what is wrong with X on this box?
