Might check the very last line (character) of
/etc/fiaif/fiaifi.conf and the other files. 

What if the last line did not end in a new 
line for some reason?

Are subprocesses involved?  Just in case:

  strace -f  -o/tmp/trace-gawk  awk -f  etc....
