Explore2fs. I don't know if it does writing to ext* but ext3 and ext2 are
only different in the journalling section. Otherwise (other than low level
stuff which is beyond the scope of both my knowledge and intent), they
function the same.

Sorry I can't be of more help. I'm aiming at lookinng for better info for
