IMVHO, you're giving yourself a headache needlessly! <G>

Among the choices during install is to automatically partition,
(AND) verify before continuing *or* partition yourself. (You 
probably missed this section, but it *is* in the installation
routine). 

Once you get to that section, you can resize or change the
partition type using disk druid.
