Thanks for the advice, but this isn't the problem. Even with cdda2wav
ripping runs at .9x speed. XCDRoast is still much much faster. I am
tending toward believing it is an ide-scsi problem because the exact
same problem occurs with rythmbox

Of course, if you have some doubt that the cd is scratched or jittery, uses the standard cdparanoia.
