I am actually tweaking LTSP to run stuff in a modified mannor and I had to remove the idea of runlevels from the system.  So I am currently left with a kernel that boots and can start X but I need to start the GDM to get it to where it look just like a Redhat logon prompt.

GDM is the default, but XDM is available. Add a line that reads

     DISPLAYMANAGER="XDM"

to /etc/sysconfig/desktop.

Assuming that you have a proper XF86Config (or you have configured
{g,x}dm not to start a local X server) it should be as simple as running
the daemon from the command line.
