Perhaps all we need to track is the outermost point?

{
	bool remove_the_rq = false;

	...
	if (current->the_rq == NULL) {
		current->the_rq = rq;
		remove_the_rq = true;
	}
	...
	if (remove_the_rq)
		current->the_rq = NULL;
}
