Probably it would be faster without these "...", which look like
no man's land...
hold_lock = mutex_trylock()
if (hold_lock) {
/* SMP safe */
...
mutex_unlock()
} else {
/* SMP unsafe */
...
/* maybe try again after some break or check */
}
