I don't know if this helps, but I can work around the problem in
2.6.20.x by unbinding/binding the i8042 in my console program before
soliciting input:

echo -n "i8042" > /sys/bus/platform/drivers/i8042/unbind
echo -n "i8042" > /sys/bus/platform/drivers/i8042/bind

but this doesn't work for 2.6.21.x
