Hi !
I finally managed to update my release scripts to safely produce a
final release, so I have released a 2.4.34 identical to -rc4, which
added just a security fix to -rc3. Complete changelog appended.
I've also released 2.4.33.7 with the same fix for those still
tracking 2.4.33.x.
Depending on the load on the servers here, it might take some time
before 2.4.34 shows up on www.kernel.org. Also, _please_ only use
www2.kernel.org, which is less loaded than www1.
For those who did not track the pre-releases, 2.4.34 brings the usual
bunch of security fixes, bugfixes, and adds support for gcc 4 to x86,
x86-64 and sparc64, thanks to Mikael Pettersson's work. What I did
not expect first is that it seems to ease the maintenance job for some
subsystem maintainers who mostly work on 2.6 right now.
One user reported regular panics with aacraid since 2.4.32, so there's
no regression here. I will seek for some help to get this fixed in
2.4.35. I also get reports of people getting trapped by NIC vendors
who suddenly change their ethernet chips with no big warning notice.
The i82546GB chip which replaced the i82546EB in e1000 cards come to
mind. It is not supported by the driver in 2.4.34 but I will try to
solve this in 2.4.35 (right now, you have to download the vendor's
drivers when you replace a NIC).
Another driver should get some lifting : skge. I have got a few
reports of problems with the vendor's sk98lin driver and I noticed
the same problems at work (UDP becoming silent on NFS server). I
already have adapted Stephen Hemminger's backport for a merge, and
it seems to work correctly on my personal kernels. Stephen kindly
offered to help me get this driver in sync with 2.6, which will fix
problems for people who previously had problems with the vendor's
driver, and it will ease further maintenance.
I also received a request to merge the gcc 4 fixes for mips, but the
patch came as a big chunk. I might consider reviewing it later when
I have time. I should also merge most of the typo fixes that Mariusz
Kozlowski sent me.
Concerning the 2.4.X.Y tree, as Greg recommended to me, I will
create a different git repository for 2.4.34.Y, and will probably
do a little cleanup in the existing branches. It will be easier
to release stable kernels that way. I don't think I will still
provide 2.4.33.Y trees, unless it does not take me more time and
there is real and justified demand.
Last but not least, a really big thanks to Grant Coady who saves
me some CPU (and human) time by building and testing all the
pre-releases on several machines, and who then puts the results
online.
Best regards,
Willy
