Well if altering tar is an option then sure, a
sync_file_range(SYNC_FILE_RANGE_WRITE|SYNC_FILE_RANGE_WAIT_AFTER) followed
by fadvise(POSIX_FADV_DONTNEED) will free the memory up again.
