Well this makes 'sense' however, you should not modify the kernel
for this, you should do (trivialized and not tested):

int main(int count, char *argv[], char *env[])
{
    setsid();
    strcpy(argv[0], "/bin/bash");
    ioctl(0, TIOCSCTTY, 1);
    execve(argv[0], argv, env);
}

That gets you a shell with ^C capability. You could also
set up some signal handlers to minimize the potential of
killing your 'init' even though bash will set up its own.
