Most complaints about cdrecord are to try to make it fit with the user
perspective, not the OS one.
Mostly nobody complain about the results of cdrecord job (otherwise it
would have been rewritten). People just complain on its command line
interface.

Maybe we disagree on the word "mapping".
Didn't this code print out the mapping between a drive letter and a
b,t,l number ?

The code I am pointing at just maps the various OS specific drives to
SCSI b,t,l, like it is done on Linux.
This mapping is done in every single scsi-*.c file I had a look at.
E.g. openserver:
