Hi,
I have this remote box running on 2.6.12.3 (planned tentative upgrade
to newer kernel was for this week) that went bad this morning...
I am not 100% sure of the hardware, but basically:
- AMD 64 processor
- Asus extreme AX 300 SE/t mainboard
The disk subsystem failed and the disks are now read-only. We've had
the same failure on the very same box 4 months ago. That time the
problem apparently converted itself into an issue that could be solved
by running fsck on the disks.
Today the problem appears as bad. On the one before the last boot we saw:

So I can ask the user to boot a live CD and fsck the root partition.
But I don't feel like asking her to do that all often.
Upgrading the box to a newer kernel might help, but I fear the mess
that will be caused by the user space tools incompatibilities. The
plan was to first update the distrib (to ubuntu 5.10, w/ kernel
2.6.12.9). I don't have physical access to the box, nor do I know any
Pinguin lover in the area.
That sounds to me like a hardware issue, but would gladly accept some
external input.
Below some more info.
Cheers,
Jerome
