Lost Ticks on x86_64

[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]

Hi, I'm running an Athlon64 X2 4400+ (a dual core model) with an
nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra on a Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-SLI motherboard and
getting nasty messages like these in my dmesg:

warning: many lost ticks.
Your time source seems to be instable or some driver is hogging interupts
rip default_idle+0x20/0x30

I've had this problem on every kernel I've tried running (as far as I
can remember, these were 2.6.13-rc1-mm1, 2.6.12-gentoo-r3,
2.6.12-gentoo-r7). I've played with timing options in the kernel and
kernel arguments, but nothing has seemed to help. Currently, I'm using
2.6.13-rc1-mm1 with the boot arguments ``root=/dev/hdd3 clock=pmtmr''
and a kernel without HPET (I was told this board doesn't have an HPET,
but it didn't make any difference whether it was enabled or not). The
error appears in my dmesg usually after a CPU-intensive task (glxgears
is what I use to see if my tweaks have fixed anything).

Perhaps of interest, this machine has an Adaptec 2100S SCSI controller
in it, but there are no drivers for x86_64 Linux. IRQ 5 is shared by
the nVidia SMBus, the nVidia USB controller, and the TI IEEE1394
controller. IRQ 7 is shared by the onboard AC'97 audio controller and
the SCSI controller without a driver. I also get the following in my
dmesg:

PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:0b.0 to 64
pcie_portdrv_probe->Dev[005d:10de] has invalid IRQ. Check vendor BIOS
assign_interrupt_mode Found MSI capability

I'm at my wit's end with this. I don't seem to have the problem in
Windows, so it looks like either a kernel bug or some braindead thing
I did that no one has been able to catch. My 2.6.13-rc1-mm1 kernel
config is below (I apologize in advance for the length; I've no idea
what's causing this so I thought it best to include everything):
