[Fwd: Re: BTTV - experimental no_overlay patch]

Greg,

It seems that some newer VIA chipsets have some troubles with PCI2PCI
data transfers. These problems had occurred on the past (while Gerd
Knorr were the V4L maintainer) and affected Overlay support for bttv
cards, mostly on via chipsets.
Bodo (and others) had reported some OOPS occurring when activating
Overlay support (that makes data transfers from PCI bttv cards to AGI
video card).
We've made some tests deactivating overlay support and they reported no
OOPS.
I'm submiting a patch for V4L bttv to allow disabling pci2pci transfers
based on quirks.c information and also an optional workaround parameter
to force the board to don't allow (no_overlay insmod parameter).
I think you may also check if it is a hardware problem with these via
chips or something that can be fixed by software (increasing some
delays, for example?).

Mauro.
Current V4L Maintainer.
