OK, let's look.

Shoving the RDBMS into the kernel doesn't solve this, quite to the
contrary. It makes the whole system less flexible (if you don't want MySQL
but something else, you can't get it easily). The whole is /more/ complex
(kernel space programming is /a huge lot harder/ than userspace
programming). It will be /much more/ unstable, as any idiotic bug in the
RDBMS will bring the /whole system/ down, or screw up completely unrelated
innocent bystanders.

Having stuff inside the kernel doesn't make it magically simple(r) to
use. Quite the opposite.

If what you want to do can be expressed in terms of ln(1), mv(1), rm(1) et
al, do use them and be happy: No need for any fancy database stuff. If it
can't, I'm sorry, but it /will/ be complex anyway.

And why don't you use a version management system for this? You could use
RCS (simple, easy to use; but doesn't handle sideways relations at all), or
something more complex. Userland solutions /do/ exist, and work fine. They
even handle saving stuff over the network, etc.

And shove RPM into the kernel...
All this means that you have /zilch/ possibility to savage your data if the
system with the custom plugins isn't available. Thanks, had more than
enough fun with corrupted "databases" elsewhere. No need to make /all/ data
dependent on something like that.

You have to consider not only the userland code, but also the kernel
code. That it comes "for free" with ReiserFS doesn't make it go away. Plus
the fact that whatever it provides will be ideal for a few applications, a
bad fit (but livable) for many, and completely useless (or even plainly
counterproductive) for some. Yes, there are operating systems around that
don't have "files", everything is in a database. PHBs love them, the
people who develop for them or have to manage them hate them.
Again, operating systems with funny "just as applications require"
structured files were common until Unix came along with the simple "a file
is a sequence of bytes, do as you wish with it but in userland" and the lot
went away like a bad dream. Unix is about simple, generic infrastructure on
which you can build what /you/ want, not just what /the system/ allows.
Don't kill that.

Chicken and egg: Applications using strange filesystem semantics won't show
up until said semantics are commonplace, which won't be until there is
extensive use...

No. It has to be done right (or nearly right) from the start. Also,
screwing around with filesystems /is/ risky, as it could affect innocent
bystanding filesystems.
