Gee, it's been ages.  umm,

- umount the fs
- tune2fs -O ^has_journal /dev/whatever
- fsck -fy                              (to clean up the now-orphaned journal inode)
- tune2fs -j -J size=nblocks    (normally 4k blocks)
- mount the fs
