Thanks very much.

Now I have to confess that the server involved is running Centos-5.5,
not Fedora.
(I wrote to this list because I get much better answers here!)

I don't see anything wrong with the spamassassin package
(spamassassin-3.2.5-1.el5) from which spamd came.
But I've added
	score FH_DATE_PAST_20XX         0
to ~/.spamassassin/user_prefs .

Hopefully that should do the trick;
but I'll continue investigating what is happening.
