I thought I would follow up and point out that it was because of the
GNOME "monitor" application that was forcing the resolution to be
1280x1024 for that user. I didn't realize that was even a
configuration applet that was even available. I thought the nvidia
configuration application would adjust it accordingly, so never even
looked for another program.
