        Ok, I had to install ekiga, it wasn't there by default. The
        image quality is the same. When I open ekiga and look at the
        video settings they are all set to the minimum, sliders to the
        left. Only "whiteness"has a perceptible effect and that can only
        be increased worsening the problem.

        It's as though the problem is recognized but the video level is
        beyond the normal range of adjustment. I have an urge to open
        the camera and do what is required to attenuate the video level!
        Can't do that though, I don't know anything about the camera ...

        Thanks for the suggestion though, any response is appreciated.

        I suppose it would be appropriate to report a bug  but against
        what, Cheese, et.al. look like a front end for some other
        application?
