I think your problem is more a case of mixed ownership, not permissions.
It might get you more answers, with that subject line.

But, unless you're going to try and put an EXT filesystem on the disc,
instead of the usual FAT-like one that CDs use, I'd be inclined to tar
up the files you want to backup, and copy the tar.
