geoff@mtranch[1]->echo $TERM
xterm
geoff@mtranch[2]->clear
'xterm': unknown terminal type.

On further thought, /usr/bin/clear is packaged with ncurses, and so one 
would think that it would depend, ultimately, on /usr/share/terminfo/x/
xterm,which exists and is readable. Hmmmm .... time for a reboot?
